Description
1895 Antique hallmarked sterling silver Scottish Quaich with pierced handlesAbout 8 1/2" wide handle to handle, the center is 5" in diameter, 2 1/4" high.
Condition is excellent overall, a few minor scratches and small creases, normal and expected.
Full hallmarks for Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh, 1895.
Weighs 210 grams, or 6.75 troy ounces of silver.
A fine piece of Scottish silver.
This piece is from estate of Canadian Brigadier General Septimus Denison, 1859-1937, CMG (Order of St Michael and St George) Chief of Staff – Western Ontario.
In his memoirs he mentions his service for the Prince & Princess of Wales, later King George V and Queen Mary, on their Canadian tour in 1901 where he was an Aide de Camp.
Also in his memoirs, Septimus Denison mentions his service as Aide de Camp to the 1st Marquis of Aberdeen, John Hamilton-Gordon, who held the office of Governor-General of Canada between 1893 and 1898.
A direct quote from his memoirs- "My second duty as A.D.C. was with the Marquis of Aberdeen when he was Governor General of Canada and a very pleasant duty it was."
This piece was a gift to Brigadier General Denison from the Marquis for his service.
The front of the piece is engraved "Fortuna Sequator" (Fortune follows), This is the motto of the Marquess of Aberdeen family.
The reverse is engraved with the Denison Family crest of an hand pointing toward a six point star (North Star).
